Back in February 2022, GFN Source reviewed the NACON MG-X Pro controller for Android, at the time our conclusion was that the MG-X Pro set a high standard for Mobile Gaming Controllers.  NACON has now launched the MG-X Pro for iPhone and once again we have been fortunate enough to review the device and see if it is as good as its Android counterpart.

I am pretty new to iOS devices, I made the move over from Android at the end of 2022. One thing I missed instantly was my collection of Android Mobile Gaming Controllers. Not owning a Gaming Control for an iPhone was not something that entered into my thought process until I actually had the device physically in my possession and fancied firing up a game on GeForce NOW and had no Controler to do so, sure I could have used touch controls, but that really is not something for me. Now thanks to NACON, this issue is solved.

The MG-X Pro for iPhone is a wireless device that connects to your iPhone via Bluetooth, it charges via USB-C, with a cable provided in the box. It boasts a 20-hour battery life, which so far for me seems to hold true, I have put in several long sessions of Mass Effect 2 and Crysis 2 Remastered and the battery level is still holding strong. The controller is designed with the Xbox Series Controllers very much in mind, it has an ergonomic grip for maximum comfort whilst playing. There is also a very handy MG-X NACON app available from the app store which allows you to download any firmware updates for the MG-X Pro, with more features coming to the app very soon.

The first thing I always do with Controllers such as these, I like to place my phone into the controller and just get the Controller into my hands without actually playing a game, purely so I can get a feel for the Controller. I have an iPhone 14 Plus, a fairly large phone, I also have a rubberized case for my phone and even with the case still attached my iPhone can fit into the MG-X Pro holder with no issues at all. Just like its Android counterpart, the MG-X Pro for iPhone feels fantastic. I have reviewed several Mobile Gaming Controllers from several different companies and the MG-X Pro by far feels the best out of all the ones I have tested thus far. This is very much where the ergonomic design of the Controller pays off. As mentioned previously, I have had some really long gaming sessions using the MG-X Pro and each time I had no real feeling of discomfort at all. A special mention here has to go to both the thumbsticks and the trigger buttons on the MG-X Pro. The thumbsticks feel fantastic, they even with a little concave on them for that extra bit of grip. The trigger buttons are nice and large and feel natural to press, some other Controllers like has suffered from the triggers being too small, thankfully the MGX- Pro does not have this issue.

In terms of size, for being designed with the Xbox controllers in mind, the MG-X Pro is surprisingly compact and lightweight. It will certainly easily into a bag or backpack, it does with mine anyway, I am not sure however that it would be a controller you could place into your pocket, for that it may be a little too big.

Simply put, if you are looking for a Gaming Controller for an iPhone device then you certainly will not go wrong with the NACON MG-X Pro, in fact, I would go out on a limb to say that this may very well be the best Mobile Gaming Controller for iPhone currently available, which is very high praise given some of the competitors that are currently on the market. It is compatible with a range of Cloud Gaming services, although I personally have only tested it with GeForce NOW. Of course, there are a couple of things I would like to see added, such as more colours and perhaps an option to purchase it alongside a carry case, as compact as the controller is, it would be great to have that extra option for even easier transportation. However, these are minor issues and are more of a personal preference, they do not detract from the quality of the performance of the MG-X Pro at all.

The NACON MG-X Pro for iPhone is currently available to purchase for around £99.99 which puts it around the same price as the Razer Kishi V2 and the Backobone One. Overall, the NACON MG-X Pro for iPhone gets the official GFN Source seal of approval.
